Lemosho route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west. You will begin with a drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. Once you are here, you will spend your first two days trekking through the rainforest to Shira ridge. Lemosho is considered to be the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro. It is our favorite one, because it offers a perfect balance between low traffic, scenic views and a higher summit success (around 80%). Lemosho route is about 70km (42miles) long, from gate to gate.
Unlike the highly popular Machame route which simply brushes the Shira Plateau, Lemosho route goes across the entire plateau, from West to the East in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. The route takes more days to climb, so it offers great acclimatization opportunities.
You will be picked up at your hotel at around 08:00am and transferred to the Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After the registration process you will still start our climb steadily through the forests of the Lemosho glades to reach Big Tree camp where you will be spending the night.
Today you will cover a lot of ground as you trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. We will trek through Shira 1 Camp from where there are often views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds as we head towards our destination which is Shira 2. We gain a reasonable amount of altitude as we head towards Shira 1 and parts of the route are fairly steep. As you proceed towards Shira 2 you will get the chance to view the Northern Ice fields from the western side of the mountain with some unusual views of Kibo. Our steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau will help with acclimatization and we enjoy great panoramic views.
Your trek starts with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, walking in to the climatic zone of the upland desert and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. You will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), our high point for the day and a great place to enjoy your lunch. In the afternoon we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs but with extensive views of the plains below.
Our day starts by descending into the start of the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley. From here we have a steep climb up from Karanga valley to our night’s camp at Karanga camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong we will go for a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4200m before descending back to camp for the night.
After a good night’s rest and breakfast, we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. It’s a tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp, we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up at between 11pm and 12pm to start the climb to the summit.
Hiking to the summit will begin short after midnight, at around 12:30 A.M., as our path twists through heavy scree towards Stella Point at the crater rim. This part of the hike is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the ascend. Once we reach Stella Point, you will rest and refresh with warm cup of tea or coffee, accompanied by the views of the magnificent sunrise coming above Mawenzi. Going further up, you might encounter snow storm, although it is dictated by the season you are taking for the hike. The summit, Uhuru Peak – the highest point on Kilimanjaro and all of Africa, is just an hour ascend from Stella Point.
From the summit, you will start trekking down to Mweka campsite. Lunch stop will be at Barafu camp, where you can take some rest, before we continue our descend towards Mweka Campsite, which is located in the forest. Here, you will have your last dinner and overnight on the Kilimanjaro.
Breakfast will be served before we begin hiking down to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive summit certificates. Path on the lower elevations can be rather wet and muddy, so the gaiters and trekking poles might come handy. There will be a vehicle waiting at the gate to take you back to your accommodation in Moshi.

Cost $80 and felt this was the only trip not worth the money. We did Victoria falls (both sides), elephant encounter, sunset cruise and Botswana safari - all drivers and tour guides were friendly and helpful lemOctober 6, 2024Verified Amazing Kilimanjaro It was an amazing trip, excellent guides, great food and all aspects of comfort and safety were taken care off. Phil and Mathew are simply amazing. Ravi ASeptember 5, 2024Verified Great safari experince My wife and I used Furaha Tours & Safaris, based in Arusha, as a tour operator for our Tanzanian safari in Aug. 2024, our first trip ever to Tanzania and Africa actually. We had lots of questions and weren’t sure what to expect. Phil, the owner of Furaha, was always available to answer them for us. He was patient, prompt, customer focused and precise in his responses. He was very flexible in customizing our itinerary based on our needs. He ensured that we had the most pleasant experience from the moment we landed in Arusha to the time of our departure. We highly recommend Furaha Tours & Safaris as a tour company for a safari expedition in Tanzania. Our guide during the safari was Rajab. Getting a great tour guide is a vital component of the safari experience as you would be spending the next 5-7 days or more depending on your itinerary with your guide. Rajab is a fantastic guide with a wealth of knowledge in wildlife, a safe driver and has a great eye for spotting wildlife in the bushes of Serengeti or the grasses of the Ngorongoro crater. He is passionate about his job, has an immense sense of pride to be a Tanzanian, and a great off-road driver on the challenging terrain you will encounter. On our trip, we visited Northen Serengeti with the hope to witness the Mara River crossing of the wildebeest during their Great Migration. Watching a river crossing requires luck, great driving skill and an intuition to predict where a migration is likely to occur. Rajab brought the latter two to the table and with an element of luck, gave us a once in a lifetime experience of witnessing 3 crossings in a matter of a couple of hours, not to mention, with the best spot in the house. On our trip back to the airport, we came across a roadblock to the airport due to the passing of the Tanzanian President’s motorcade who was visiting Arusha for a conference. We were not sure if we would make it to the airport in time and were quite nervous. Rajab worked with a couple of other safari drivers and coordinated a plan to do some off-road driving in the city to get us close enough to the airport to be able to make it on time when the motorcade eventually passed. Due to his actions, we not only made it on time to the airport, but instead, we had some time to freshen up for our long journey back home. We very highly recommend Rajab as he is an exceptional individual and tour guide. SunnySeptember 2, 2024Verified Wonderful 6-Days Safari I highly recommend this Safari tour and Furaha company. Our journey was perfect, with the Big Five and the beautiful Tanzania in our sight.Phil is a super warm and caring friend. From the very beginning of the planning stage, he patiently answered every question I had and helped us perfect every detail. After arriving in Tanzania, one of my friends had a problem with his luggage. Phil helped us contact the airport and arranged for the luggage to be shipped to near Serengeti by a small plane during the trip. Our guide Rajab is super energetic and professional. He kept the car very clean and provided us with delicious food and perfect explanations. He is also a patriot who has his own insights and pride in Tanzania's national development.I will definitely come back to Tanzania, this beautiful land, to meet beautiful people and nature again. Zihao ShengJuly 17, 2024Verified Furaha Trips gave us a great experience. It was a very happy few days travelling with Furaha Trips, we had a lot of good memories and the guide was a very, very nice person, very responsible, took care of us, he was very nice to us and we saw all the animals we wanted to see. Thank you most for the delay in my luggage, but the Trips boss and director were always helping me get in touch with my luggage and it ended up being shipped to the grasslands for free, so it was a lucky adventure! Very Recommended Furaha and the director told us that Furaha means Happy and we were really happy. 泽茜 孙July 17, 2024Verified One of the best experiences of my life - 7 days of climbing the Lemosho route at Kilimanjaro Just got down from the mountain, and it has been one of the absolutely best experiences of my life. But also one of the toughest. Before leaving the hotel, the guide checked all of my gear. I needed more warm clothes, which we then rented on the way. Really nice that they help you make sure you have all the gear you need. The equipment Furaha brought was good quality. Almost new tent, warm sleeping back, soft mattress and pillow and so on. Allways put up and ready when arriving to a next basecamp. Also always a hot cup of tea, and warm water to wash-up after a long day hike. The food was really great, and especially when thinking of it made on one stove. Fresh vegetables and fruit, pasta, local dishes etc. And always asking if any specific request.During the 7 days I felt 100% safe, and during the hikes I really enjoyed the company of the guide. Telling me about the nature and wildlife of Kili, how to breath the right way for better performance (really needed for last hike to the top during night), local culture and so.The hole team worked together to give me the best possible 7 days. And they really succeeded.I can only recommend traveling with Furaha. Right from choosing the route at Kili 6 month before leaving to sitting at the hotel (that they have booked) 7 days later.
